I am an EU Citizen with Settled Status, can I apply for Citizenship?

  • Posted on

I’m an EU citizen and have a settled status in the UK since January 2020. I completed my bachelor and master degrees in the UK and I have a permanent job in the UK. Due to covid I have been absent from the UK for a year and 3 months, and I have also been outside the UK for more than 450 days in the past 5 years. Could you please confirm whether I am eligible to apply for a British passport.

Thank you for your enquiry.

There is a continuous residence requirement for Citizenship applications in the UK which includes not being absent from the UK for more than 90 days in the last 12 month period and 450 days in total outside the UK for the 5 years prior to submitting the application.

There are exceptions in place due to the pandemic and discretion may be applied in circumstances where the applicant has been unable to return to the UK due to travel and/or immigration restrictions.
