The Differences Between the Global Talent Visa and the Skilled Worker Visa
The UK wants to attract highly skilled people to improve economic productivity. Two Work Visa routes helping to achieve this objective are the Skilled Worker Visa and the Global Talent Visa. Both visas can lead to UK settlement and British citizenship. However, there are significant differences in the two application processes and eligibility criteria.
It is worth understanding the differences between the Global Talent Visa and the Skilled Worker Visa, so that, with the help of UK Immigration Solicitors, you can choose the visa route that best matches your skills and settlement plans.
The Skilled Worker Visa
The Skilled Worker Visa is the obvious choice if you want to apply for a UK Work Visa. Its main features include:
- Sponsorship - an employer must sponsor your employment throughout your residence in the UK on the Skilled Worker Visa.
- Employment - before applying for the Skilled Worker Visa, you must have an offer of employment from an employer with a sponsor licence.
- Listed job - the job offer must be for a job on a list of jobs that qualify for the Skilled Worker Visa with a standard occupational classification code.
- Salary - the employer must pay the minimum salary threshold for the job. This is the greater of £41,700 or the going rate for the job. Lower salary thresholds may be available if you qualify as a new entrant or for some types of jobs.
- Settlement - the Skilled Worker Visa may lead to settlement in the UK if you meet the Indefinite Leave to Remain eligibility criteria after living in the UK for five years.
The Global Talent Visa
The key features of the Global Talent Visa are:
- Specific talents - applicants are only eligible to apply for the Global Talent Visa if their talent lies in a specified field, such as digital technology or arts and culture.
- Endorsement – an endorsement is usually required from an endorsing body. The endorser needs to confirm that the applicant is a leader in their field of talent or shows promise of becoming a leader in their field of expertise.
- No job offer - there is no requirement for sponsored employment or a job offer before applying for the visa.
- Flexibility - Global Talent Visa holders can choose whether to work for an employer or to be self-employed. There is therefore no minimum salary threshold associated with visa eligibility.
- Potential for fast-track settlement - the Global Talent Visa can lead to settlement after three or five years, depending on whether the holder is endorsed as a talented individual or as a person with promise.

Choosing between the Global Talent Visa and the Skilled Worker Visa
Many people do not make a conscious choice between the Global Talent Visa and the Skilled Worker Visa because they do not realise that they may meet the talent or promise criteria. Likewise, many employers assume they need a sponsor licence to hire an overseas worker. A sponsor licence is required for some types of jobs and visa applicants, but not for highly skilled roles in eligible areas of talent.
UK Immigration Lawyers can help employers and individuals understand the eligibility criteria for both types of visas and what each visa offers. Getting the visa type right is critical because applying for the wrong visa can cause delays for both the applicant and the employer. Taking the safe route of applying for a Skilled Worker Visa adds extra costs for the employer, reduces the visa applicant's flexibility, and may extend the time it takes them to qualify for settlement and British citizenship.
The advantages of the Skilled Worker Visa
The advantages of the Skilled Worker Visa over the Global Talent Visa include:
- Straightforward application process compared to the Global Talent Visa.
- No requirement for endorsement.
- A wider range of skills qualify for the Skilled Worker Visa, provided the sponsored job qualifies and has a standard occupational classification code.
- Can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain after five years' residence with clear requirements.
The disadvantages of the Skilled Worker Visa
While the Skilled Worker Visa application process is easier than the Global Talent Visa, it has disadvantages for employee and employer, namely:
- Sponsored employment is required throughout the visa and when applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain.
- If the employment is terminated, the visa is curtailed, and the holder must leave the UK if they cannot get another job with an employer with a sponsor licence.
- The visa holder must be paid the minimum salary threshold for the duration of the visa.
- The visa holder is restricted in what additional work they can undertake.
- Sponsorship requires an employer to pay additional expenses, such as the sponsor licence application fee, certificate of sponsorship fee and immigration skills charge and comply with licence reporting and recording duties.
Applying for the Skilled Worker Visa or Global Talent Visa
The application process for the Skilled Worker Visa and the Global Talent Visa is very different.
Most Global Talent Visa applicants must undergo a two-stage application process:
- Endorsement application with endorsement by an approved endorsing body, and
- Home Office application.
With the Skilled Worker Visa application, the process involves:
- The sponsoring employer assigns a certificate of sponsorship to the prospective employee, and
- The applicant applies to the Home Office for their visa.
The main difference between the applications lies in the endorsement process for Global Talent Visa applicants and the amount of information and documentation required to succeed in a Global Talent Visa application compared to other Work Visas. Whilst Skilled Worker Visa applicants must submit standard paperwork, Global Talent Visa applicants must provide documents evidencing their talent. Hence, the required documents are far more case-specific for the Global Talent Visa applicant.
Although the Global Talent Visa application process is more complex than the Skilled Worker Visa route, many say the visa's flexibility and potential for accelerated settlement make it worth the extra work.
Dependants and the Skilled Worker Visa and the Global Talent Visa
Whether you enter the UK on a Skilled Worker Visa or a Global Talent Visa, you can be joined by close family members if they meet the criteria for a Dependant Visa. Dependants can work in the UK without requiring sponsorship. It is the relationship between the dependent and the main visa applicant that determines the success of a Dependant Visa application, not the choice of Global Talent Visa or Skilled Worker Visa.
