Can I bridge a visa gap before getting sponsored?

We have an employee we'd like to sponsor, their visa runs out in May this year, if they need to extended their visa for a short period of time can they do this until the visa has been approved and the sponsorship has been sorted?

This would depend on the type of visa they already have in place. It might be worth it for the applicant to return to their home country and apply for entry clearance from overseas on a Skilled Worker Visa when sponsorship is finalised.
